Dawson City at a Glance
Historic Dawson City, located 538 km (336 mi) north of Whitehorse
on the Alaskan
Highway, is known widely for its starring role in the Klondike Gold Rush,
a prospecting and gold panning frenzy that occurred in the late 1800's. At that
time, Dawson City was the capital of the Yukon
Territories and also the largest city west of Winnipeg.
Over a century later, the city still retains its historical feela walk through
the town centre reveals only old-fashioned buildings, and the government requires
that all new structures follow suit. No trip to Dawson City is complete without
visiting Diamond
Tooth Gertie's Gambling Hall, Canada's oldest Casino. History buffs and fans
of American classics like White Fang should head to the Jack
London Cabin & Interpretive Centre, which was the famed authors home for many
years. Fitting to its gold rush past, Dawson City has gold-panning tours that
allow tourists to try their hand at wooing that elusive yellow nugget.
